Toshiba America Nuclear Energy
Opens National Project Management and
Engineering Center in Charlotte

During a press conference today in Charlotte, N.C., Secretary of Commerce, Keith Crisco, announced that Toshiba America Nuclear Energy Corporation, a new U.S. subsidiary of Toshiba established in January 2008, in Falls Church, V.A. will create 194 jobs in Charlotte over the next five years. The newly-formed national Project Management and Engineering Center in Charlotte will function as a base for Toshiba’s nuclear power business in the U.S. The company projects a capital investment of $2.8 million in the Charlotte office.

"Charlotte is a great place for our company to do business," said Fuyuki Saito, President and Chief Executive Officer of Toshiba America Nuclear Energy Corporation. "It offers the workforce we need for our new Project Management and Engineering Center. Charlotte gives us easy access to our customers and other companies involved in the nuclear power industry, and it has an outstanding quality of life. We are excited to be coming to Charlotte."

The 194 jobs carry an average wage of $122,037 and will generate positions in engineering, information technology, administration and related areas. In addition to engineering services, the Charlotte engineering office will market and sell advanced boiling water nuclear reactors to be constructed in the U.S.

“We are pleased to have Toshiba announce their plans to expand in our city and create 194 new jobs,” said Bob Morgan, Charlotte Chamber President. “We thank them for their investment and the jobs that are being created. Thanks also to Kati Hynes of the Charlotte Chamber team for her hard work on this project.”

Morgan added, “This announcement confirms that the energy sector presents tremendous opportunities in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. The first Charlotte Energy Summit was held just one month ago. Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers is leading the effort to help existing energy firms to expand, to attract new firms, to seek federal stimulus dollars to our region and to begin branding ourselves as the Clean Tech Capital of the United States. Toshiba is now an important part of that story.”

The Charlotte Chamber would like to thank Governor Beverly Perdue, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Charlotte Regional Partnership, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County for their assistance and contribution of support to this important project.
